Cairns State High School

Cairns State High School is located in the centre of Cairns – only a few hundred metres from the sea. The school has an excellent reputation for academic excellence, complemented by excellence in music, drama, ballet, visual arts and sports.

Cairns State High School‘s ambition is to offer flexible and innovative teaching programs that are specifically designed to meet the needs of students in a rapidly changing environment. The integration of technology into all aspects of learning is a solid example of this commitment.

Cairns State High School offers a range of excellence programs in the specialist subjects, including aerospace and engineering in the technical field, arts in music, dance, drama and film, and sports in the Basketball Excellence Program, which has produced a whole series of Australian basketball champions.

The Music Excellence Program is divided into instrumental music and choirs. In addition to actively making music in the various orchestras and choirs (see “Music”), participants attend national and international concerts and can sit in on rehearsals if applicable. They have the opportunity to work with guest conductors and take part in masterclasses.

It is also possible to take a PADI diving course as part of the subjects Marine Science and Aquatic Practices – just the thing for Cairns, which is the centre of diving on the Great Barrier Reef.
