Southport State High School is one of the oldest schools in Queensland and is located in the heart of the Gold Coast, not far from Griffith University and Bond University. The Chinatown district is close by, as are the Broadwater Parklands with its many recreational opportunities and The Spit Surf Beach, where world-class surfing is the order of the day.
Apart from the standard academic subjects, Southport State High School‘s has a strong focus on technology. The School is also very strong in artistic and creative activities such as music, drama, dance or design.
The Creative Arts Excellence Program comprises the areas of Drama, Dance, Music, Musical Theatre and Visual Art. In Drama, students create their own theater production with which they participate in a regional theater festival.
Dance Excellence students perform in competitions and also benefit from workshops with industry professionals. They regularly work together in various school dance ensembles in which they refine their technique in the lyrical, hip hop and contemporary genres.
The Music Excellence Program is divided into instrument and voice. Participants benefit from external performance opportunities at festivals and events as well as working with professionals and professional partnerships such as the Queensland Conservatorium of Music.
In addition, Southport State High School offers a wide range of extra-curricular activities. These include sports, excursions and trips (including the school ski trip), as well as culinary competitions and social engagement.
The school organizes four excursions per year (voluntary, extra costs). Destinations include Tangalooma, Byron Bay, Mt Tamborine, Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
