Marryatville High School is located four kilometers east of downtown Adelaide on an eight-hectare campus surrounded by eucalyptus trees on the banks of First Creek. For year 12 students, there is the heritage-listed Eden Park House, a historic Victorian building set in lush gardens on a separate campus.
Marryatville High School offers all students a varied and academically challenging curriculum, with music and tennis being the outstanding specializations.
As one of four specialist music schools in South Australia, Marryatville High School is able to provide instruction in musical development, theory and composition, concert practice and choir to develop and satisfy even students with professional musical potential. The school’s orchestras, big bands and choirs are of the highest standard and continuously win national and international awards. The music center is located in the “Eden Park Stables”. Here, the former stables have been converted and equipped with the latest technology, including a recording studio.
As part of the Special Interest Tennis Program, participants receive a broad academic education and are supervised by accredited coaches on the school’s hard and artificial grass courts. The theoretical lessons cover the tactical, technical, physical and psychological aspects of tennis and include anatomy and physiology, fitness, diet and nutrition, relationships, sports injuries, decision-making and the psychology of winning. The program is open to very good players after an entrance examination.
Another focus is drama or the theater program. The relatively new Marryatville’s Performing Arts Centre “The Forge” serves as a stage for the theater productions of the upper school and is also used by external theater groups.
A popular course in years 11 and 12 is outdoor education, which is offered as a regular subject without grading. In Term 1, students travel to Berry Bay on the Yorke Peninsula to surf between dolphins, camp and cook on Trangia stoves. In Term 2, students travel to Deep Creek to hike through the breathtaking landscape of the Fleurieu Peninsula. Term 3 brings rock climbing and abseiling in Warren Gorge in the Flinders Ranges, and Term 4 offers kayaking on the mighty Murray River.
