Hallett Cove School is located in a southern coastal suburb of Adelaide on an attractive campus with magnificent sea views. The school is only a few minutes’ walk from Hallett Cove Conservation Park, one of the most famous geological sites in Australia with international significance. The shopping centers Hallett Cove, Westfield Marion and Colonnades are also nearby.
Hallett Cove School has a family atmosphere and offers a wide range of popular courses including marine biology, drama, music, photography and design.
The focus is otherwise on information and communication technology, marine science and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math). As part of South Australia’s STEM programme, $3.5 million has just been invested in the school, which is particularly beneficial to innovative and inspiring learning areas.
In photography, students access specialist studios where they learn industry skills from an industry professional. Using digital imaging students explore a number of shooting types from Still Life through to Sports & Action. Students have opportunities to engage in extra curricula workshops and excursions.
In Drama students participate in workshops on theatrical innovators and performance techniques. Drama also provides students with the opportunity to perform in front of other year levels; participate in evening performances, and in an Arts Showcase, and end of year productions. Apart from December, the school’s own productions are also staged in July.
Hallett Cove School aims to offer its international students a true Australian experience, sparing no effort or expense. There are two special courses for them, Australian Studies and Recreational Studies, and a range of trips and activities that are not available to local students.
The Recreational Studies course is all about getting to know the Australian environment. During two camps with backpacks, tents and sleeping bags, students carry and cook their own food on an open fire. Camps can range from the Fleurieu Peninsula to the Murray River, the Flinders Ranges and the Yorke Peninsula. Participants will experience Australia’s native wildlife and magnificent scenery. There is the opportunity to try bouldering, bushwalking and orienteering and, in warm weather, surfing, canoeing and snorkeling.
The Australian Studies course provides insight into Aboriginal history and culture, Australia’s natural disasters, slang words, top tourist spots, politics, Australian innovation, unique flora and fauna, natural resources and many other hot topics. Students participate in numerous field trips including a tour of Parliament House, the Harry Potter Library, a country school, a coastal town and other special places.
Hallett Cove School is located 15 minutes north of the city’s main surf beaches, Moana and South Port. International students can take lessons during school hours (extra cost) and are provided with the necessary equipment to develop from a beginner to a competent surfer. The instructors are qualified instructors and surfers who explain the types of waves, surfing positions and personal safety in the water.
