Devonport High School is located in the heart of Devonport on the northwest coast of Tasmania. The surrounding area offers a swimming pool, a basketball stadium, and excellent opportunities for surfing, sailing, and climbing.
The school is particularly strong in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, and math) and multimedia. There are not many international students yet, but this is precisely what attracts a lot of attention and openness. Australian classmates and teachers give them a very warm welcome. The support is excellent, and special excursions are offered for international students – for example, to wildlife parks, local industrial companies, or national parks.
Devonport High School has a long history. The original school building from 1916 still stands today. A comprehensive $11 million renovation, completed in 2022, has created modern learning spaces and contemporary facilities. The aim was to teach in a more open and collaborative way, moving away from traditional classrooms and promoting modern forms of learning that increase motivation and learning success.
The new design allows students to learn in a more visible and collaborative way. This shifts the focus from what teachers impart to independent learning by students.
Devonport High School aims to be a place of innovation, creativity, and high-quality teaching. Digital technologies and modern teaching methods play an important role in this.
