Melville Senior High School is centrally located in a quiet suburb with good public transportation links to downtown Perth. The six-hectare campus is situated on the Swan River between Perth and Fremantle and offers a spacious, well-equipped learning environment.
The core subjects at Melville Senior High School focus, among other things, on the natural sciences, humanities and social sciences, as well as health and physical education. In addition, there is a wide range of elective courses in technology and the arts. The program is complemented by the Excellence Programs in Aviation, Graphic Design and Media, and Netball.
Since the launch of its international program in 1998, the school has successfully guided numerous exchange students to university graduation in a wide variety of fields of study. In addition to academic achievements, Melville Senior High School also excels in the arts and athletics: The school is regularly represented in the community with selected contributions to art exhibitions, projects, and performances, and fields over 50 teams in interscholastic sports, frequently ranking among the top five schools in School Sport WA’s McMahon Shield.
The Specialist Aviation Program is one of the few aviation specialty programs in Western Australia recognized by the Department of Education. Taught by active professional pilots and flight instructors, the program combines theoretical instruction at the school’s own Aviation Center with real-world flight experience: Pilot Experience Flights, Trial Instructional Flights, and discounted flight lessons at Jandakot Airport through a partnership with a local flight school. Two state-of-the-art, full-motion flight simulators—the school is the only one in WA with two—enable additional hands-on training.
The Specialist Graphic Design Media Program offers hands-on work with professional tools such as iMacs, Adobe Creative Cloud, interactive tablets, and 3D printers. Taught by experienced professionals, it covers the fields of visual arts, design, film, and media and is complemented by partnerships with Murdoch University, Curtin University, Edith Cowan University, and the Black Swan Theatre.
As one of only four schools recognized by Netball WA, Melville SHS also offers a Specialist Netball Program. Experienced coaches with state and national league experience guide students through a challenging training and competition program.
As part of the Outdoor Education course, students participate in multi-day camps, such as in Dwellingup (mountain biking), Margaret River (roping), and Rottnest Island (snorkeling, including a Skipper’s Ticket course). The netball students also travel to tournaments in New Zealand and to the Gold Coast Netball Carnival, with selected talented players also competing in the International Youth Netball Challenge in Singapore.
