Smithfield State High School

Smithfield State High School is located in a beautiful area near the northern beaches of Cairns, about 15 kilometres from the city centre. It is a high performance school in academic alliance with James Cook University (JCU). This is reflected in the many courses that focus on successful university preparation and academic excellence. For example, Smithfield State High School is one of a handful of schools that offer high quality IT courses in Digital Media and Internet of Things Engineering certified by JCU.

The school offers programs of excellence in jazz and contemporary music, football and netball, and the James Cook Learning Academies. These academic programs are specifically designed for high-performing students to support their intellectual development and help them reach their full potential.

The Jazz Academy is led by qualified teachers with extensive experience in the areas of pedagogy and performance. They are supported by a jazz drummer and a singer. The curriculum focuses on jazz and contemporary styles. The focus is on performance, improvisation and music theory with an emphasis on jazz. The main subjects offered are: Winds, percussion, strings, composition, vocals or a combination of these areas.

Smithfield High also has an excellent reputation for extracurricular activities. This includes the school’s own Coast FM radio station, where students create, operate and manage their own programs. Right next to the school is a swimming pool, library, sports and recreation center. Every half hour there is a bus to Trinity Beach. Especially for the internationals, excursions to Fitzroy Island and Green Island are offered.

Smithfield State High School is a friendly school with only a few international students, which promotes a fast and strong integration into Australian life.
