Merrimac State High School

Merrimac State High School is located right in the heart of the Gold Coast on a huge campus with excellent transport links. It is an innovative school with an academic focus that offer its students every opportunity. This also applies to the Internationals. The international department has been an important part of Merrimac State High School for many years, and international students are fully integrated into the school. The school also has close links to a number of universities.

There are two subjects that have been specially developed for the International students and are very popular with them. First there is Australian Studies where International students get an overview of Australian history, geography and culture through practical activities. There are also trips to Dreamworld, Seaworld, the state capital Brisbane, the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and the Australian Outback Show.

International Sport is also offered where students learn to surf and enjoy the beach. Students taking this course also have the opportunity to go to a 3-day surf camp in Byron Bay.

Aquatic Practices is a regular subject that is also very attractive to International guest students. Here the students learn practical boating skills such as navigation and maintenance of boat engines. But it is also important to understand complex relationships within the maritime environment such as weather and tides and climate change. As part of the course, participants visit Heron Island on the Great Barrier Reef.
