Launceston – Cataract Gorge

Launceston

Launceston was established in 1806 at the mouth of the River Tamar and over time became the commercial center for wheat and wool farmers. The resultant rise in prosperity ensured that today many elegant, historic streets and century-old parks dot the city. Numerous cafes and restaurants offer a lively atmosphere.

Launceston has 68,000 inhabitants. A beach promenade connects the port with the district Inveresk. It is worthwhile to take a stroll along the promenade, along parks, restaurants and galleries to the mystically beautiful gorge with steep rugged cliffs – a popular destination also for rock climbing enthusiasts.

Launcenston is a good starting point for excursions into well known Nationalparks and in the famous wine growing regions. The weather in Launceston is mild with an average high temperature of 23° C in January (summer) and 11.5° C in June.

It’s also a place for ambitious sports fans. In the morning you can climb a mountain peak and in the afternoon paddle on the azure sea.
